How it works
How your take-home pay is worked out
Rates from Revenue, Revenue's USC bands and Citizens Information.
Your income up to the tax band (€44,000 for a single person) is taxed at 20% and the rest at 40%. Your tax credits, usually €4,000 for an employee, are then taken off the total.
If your income is over €13,000, USC is charged on all of it in bands: 0.5% on the first €12,012, 2% up to €28,700, 3% up to €70,044 and 8% above that.
4.35% of all pay if you earn over €352 a week, rising to 4.5% on 1 October 2027. A small PRSI credit applies between €352 and €424 a week.
Income tax: €44,000 at 20% is €8,800, plus €6,000 at 40% is €2,400, less €4,000 credits: €7,200. USC: €1,032.82. PRSI in 2027: €2,193.75. Take-home: €39,573.43 a year, or about €3,298 a month.
If the band rises by €2,000, anyone earning €46,000 or more saves €400 a year; someone on €45,000 saves €200. People under €44,000 gain nothing from the band, which is why credits may rise too. Try it with the what-if sliders.
