Finance Minister Simon Harris announced in the Budget 2027 statement that a new Personal Investment Account will open on 1 July 2027. It is designed for ordinary savers who want to hold shares, bonds and funds without having to deal with Revenue each year. The legislation has still to be passed, so the detail may change.
- Opens on 1 July 2027, subject to legislation
- Up to €12,000 can be invested each year
- The first €50,000 held in the account is tax free
- Anything above €50,000 is taxed at 1% a year of the value held
- No capital gains tax, dividend withholding tax or deemed disposal charge inside the account
- Derivatives and crypto assets are not allowed
