We’re preparing an API that lets developers ask Dex a question from their own applications and receive an answer with links to the sources it retrieved.
It builds on the DáilDex data API. That API gives you the records themselves: votes, questions, debates and Bills. The Dex API is for the next step, when you want help explaining what the records say.
What you can ask
A newsroom might use Dex to help a reader find the background to a vote. A community group could make a tool for following a Bill. A developer building a learning app could ask for an explanation of a parliamentary debate.
Send a question and choose a model. Dex can search official Oireachtas records and return an answer, source links and any limitations it identifies. You can also turn on web search for a request when you want it to look beyond the parliamentary record.
The links show material retrieved for an answer; they do not prove every claim is right. Dex can miss context or make mistakes, and the record it searches is not complete. Open the original sources before relying on an answer or quoting it.
Fast and Pro
There are two choices. Dex Fast is intended for everyday questions. Dex Pro is intended for questions that need more involved synthesis. Both use the same API; select dex-fast or dex-pro in your request.
The pilot is configured with GPT-6 Luna for Dex Fast and GPT-6.1 Terra for Dex Pro. These are the models behind those names, not separate models you need to configure yourself.
We may change the model behind either option as we test quality, speed and cost. For Fast, alternatives could include DeepSeek V4.1 Flash and Claude Haiku 5.5. For Pro, we may consider Claude Sonnet 5.5 and Kimi K3.1. These are possible future alternatives, not models currently configured for the API.
Pricing and access
We’re preparing the API for a pilot. The proposed price is $0.01 per completed Dex Fast answer or $0.05 per completed Dex Pro answer, before applicable taxes. Web search adds $0.05 per request. Failed answers are not charged.
Access will require an enabled API key and a balance. During the pilot, funding is handled manually. We are not offering self-service checkout yet. API usage is separate from a Dex Pro subscription on the website.
The API uses an idempotency key for each request. If a response is interrupted, retrying the same request with the same key is designed to avoid generating and charging for a second answer.
Build with the record
The Dex API is not yet generally available. If you are building something that helps people understand Irish public life, we would like to hear what you need and which sources matter to you.
