A commission, not a tribunal
The Minister for Health, Jennifer Carroll MacNeill, told the Dáil on Thursday 22 October that there will be no tribunal into failures in spina bifida and scoliosis care at Children’s Health Ireland (CHI). Instead, a statutory commission of inquiry will go ahead, as recommended by the barrister Remy Farrell SC, the Irish Examiner reported. The official Dáil record lists the debate as “Children’s Health Ireland: Statements”.
She said her officials will consult stakeholders and work with the Attorney General to draft the commission’s terms of reference, RTÉ reported. Some of the people who have campaigned on the issue watched from the visitors’ gallery.
RTÉ reported that she acknowledged no measure the Government introduces will ease the pain of those affected by the failures. RTÉ gave this as a summary, not a direct quote.
