Wallet deadline falls during Irish presidency
Ireland holds the EU Council presidency as the deadline approaches for Member States to offer an EU Digital Identity Wallet by the end of 2026, a commentary published on 26 October 2026 says.
The author describes that timing as Ireland's opportunity, writing that provision of a wallet for all citizens and businesses by December is a long-standing objective falling during Ireland's watch as part of the wider Digital Decade Policy Programme.
The European Commission sets the same EU-wide obligation, stating that Member States will make wallets available to every citizen, resident and business by the end of 2026. For six months Ireland is at the centre of EU decision-making during its presidency term.
