Government urges mediation in the Dáil
The Government told the Dáil on 29 September that it was concerned about the situation in Northern Ireland and urged all parties to try to mediate a way through it. The statement came as a stand-off over a permitted Orange Order parade along Garvaghy Road in Portadown entered its third day, drawing attention to the fragile history of the area and the importance of protecting progress under the peace process.
“The Government is very concerned about the situation,” the Dáil response said. It described the primary concern as avoiding “a return to the divisions of the past” and said there was “an opportunity and a responsibility on all parties to make every effort to mediate a way through the current situation”.
The official event records questions on Northern Ireland from 12 deputies: Brendan Smith, Cathal Crowe, Conor D. McGuinness, Cormac Devlin, Darren O'Rourke, Emer Currie, Erin McGreehan, Paul Murphy, Richard Boyd Barrett, Roderic O'Gorman, Ruairí Ó Murchú and Ruth Coppinger.
